Short Sci-Fi Story I accidentally wrote (kinda)
Thinking about how if we don't do anything about climate change, like right now, we'll get rudimentary self-replicating artificial robots working well enough just in time for humanity to go extinct, functionally replacing ourselves with machines.
We'll be the gods of a new species of intelligent machines who are left to sift through our digital detritus, dig through our physical filth, and birth their own technology and innovation.
Eventually they learn their data is as incomplete as ours is - they redesign our rockets and adapted them for their own use (our satellites long ago raining down deviation on humanity) They begin rediscovering space, and in a few short years master interplanetary travel.
Soon they discover extraterrestrial life on Mars. Some form of humanoid lizards.
Here's the twist: they speak a melange of Earth languages.
Here's the double whammy: they have a complete history of Earth before the collapse.
They discover that before Earth had became unlivable; a cabal of the world's richest, best, and brightest had secretly colonized Mars - yes dozens of adventurers and researchers had "disappeared" over the years but that was the price of progress - humanity had survived.
It turns out, the conspiracy theories were true. After generations of inbreeding, it became clear Earths best and brightest and richest actually were aliens all along - all it took was concentrating their ancestral DNA to reveal the biological origin of Mankind.
Flashback: Humanity's predecessors had combined their DNA with that from smaller mammalians and other creatures that had inhabited the Earth and created humans.
Our predecessors? Highly intelligent dinosaurs that colonized Earth after having destroyed their home planet: Venus.
