i'm going back to vim and i'm ranting about emacs

At this point I'm just going back to neovim. I really like emacs, and if I use things the way it wants me to it works great. *But, when trying to get emacs set up how I want, I have literally fight it every single step of the way. Something as basic as "I want to use hard tabs and I want them four characters wide" takes hours of reading docs and overriding package configuration it to get it to work, something that is two (2) built-in configuration options in literally any other editor on the planet earth.

Sure emacs is more customizable and powerful than any other editor, but it's equivalent to giving me the parts to a Lamborghini. Sure it'd be great if I got it working, but I don't want to spend a significant portion of my life getting it put together. It doesn't matter that it can go 0–100 in eight seconds if I have to put the engine together from scratch, I'd rather have my 1999 Pathfinder that actually just works when I turn the key.

@nytpu have you tried Doom-Emacs? I used to love neovim, but doom Emacs converted me so fast.

re: i'm going back to vim and i'm ranting about emacs

@andrewebdev I'm using doom emacs, but I end up fighting packages rather than the editor itself. I just want hard tabs in all languages but lisp and markdown and I end up having to override it one way or the other for every single file type.

I dunno, just too frustrating for me personally, although I definitely see the appeal that vanilla and doom emacs have. I guess the big thing is I only want an editor, I don't really need anything else. I'm happy with neomutt, weechat, ncmpcpp, konsole, etc, I don't want everything in emacs which removes a lot of the appeal I guess.

Wow I'm writing a lot. This makes it seem like I hate emacs, which I don't, it's just not for me. I'm glad I tried it out for a few months though.

@nytpu sounds like you need to use Editorconfig. ;)

@nytpu yes, Emacs tab handling is a stain of shame. I can’t believe they still haven’t fixed that.

@nytpu

“it’s equivalent to giving me the parts to a Lamborghini”

Yeah, and the parts to all kinds of things. Sorta like Lego. You can take the steering wheel from the Lambo and put it in the airplane. Emacs is a toolshop. Like a thousand-dimensional Unix filter.

The defaults needs to get better.

@nytpu I agree with you on the tab thing. I eventually just gave up using tabs.. which is honestly a dumb solution
