@tildeverse you're right, but what about using something like Twitter, like how @fsf@status.fsf.org did? (a.k.a. making an account there with JavaScript disabled)
And I do know Twitter is a short messaging service, but still
@BlackWinnerYoshi @tildeverse For me it depends in part on the chat platform. Advertising based social mediaβparticularly Facebook and Twitterβshould be avoided like the plague imho.
I use Discord because it is not at all problematic at the moment, but I encourage people to use alternatives like Matrix chat, partly because they are open and partly because it's always good to be prepared in any case.
@tildeverse or closed-source computers, to begin with
@tildeverse on the other hand, you're telling developers who are already doing stuff in their free time, for free, for others to further inconvenience themselves by using possibly clunky solutions for basic communication
@tildeverse
IRC FTW!
low entry, open as it's ever going to be, tons of mature clients and servers
no it's not fancy
doesn't have to
@drazraeltod @tildeverse I cannot attach a crash log because irc only supports single line messages
I cannot attach images or audio of buggy behavior because irc only supports single line messages
I cannot submit patches because irc only supports single line messages
etc
@luna @tildeverse
and none of that is relevant, because you can just throw a URL or mail handle into the chat
Nobody ever said "use IRC for everything". It's simple - yes, that's actually a feature, not a bug.
@tildeverse this is just a type of gate keeping... you'd be limiting open source contributions and participation to people who use FLOSS platforms, almost all of which are either archaic, hard to use or not widely used.
so, i don't see a problem in USING them, as long as there is a FLOSS alternative, preferably with a bridge connection between both.
@tildeverse

not only chat, but also code hosting and translation platform!

@tildeverse fr
No one should be using closed chat platforms
