You know, I often complain that three cats (the number we have) are too many for one house, and it can seem like they demand a lot of attention or get into more mischief than I like — but when it comes right down to it I am a cat person and it’s actually pleasant and satisfying to live in such cat-saturated environment
I get that one of the big obvious reasons is that there are actually all different species, and that their differences are maybe even wider than some resemblances might make them appear. But to that appearance, I mean they tend to *seem* more as if they were something like the way different breeds of dog are — basically all the same thing and able to get along. I realize that isn’t the case, but to a casual observer it’s easy to get that impression I think.
I’m sure there are perfectly serviceable explanations if I want to look in to it, but just at the moment it strikes me as odd that you don’t see more friendly interactions across different species of birds. I mean, there seems to be a fair amount of like common avian behavior, but you never see like big interspecies groups of birds just like hanging out and doing birdy stuff together.
This year, I also came across this cool update: https://basketball.realgm.com/analysis/250881/On-The-Heresy-of-Zone-Defense-23-Years-Later
This time of year always inspires me to dig out my copy of Dave Hickey’s _Air Guitar_ and re-read “The Heresy of Zone Defense”

“Not through discourse, not through the intellect,
Not even through study of the scriptures
Can the Self be realized. The Self reveals
Himself to the one who longs for the Self.
Those who long for the Self with all their heart
Are chosen by the Self as his own.”
– The Mundaka Upanishad (tr. Eknath Easwaran)
"biological sex" is so ridiculous if you think about it for one second. "sex" is a generalization of a bunch of characteristics, dumbass. it's semantic by definition. that's why it's impossible to come up with any specific criteria for it that doesn't fall apart immediately in the face of biological reality.
I wrote a little python script to cast an I Ching reading. It uses real random data from random.org, weighted to traditional yarrow stalk method probabilities.
